CIIS Public Programs: Franchesca Ramsey
Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 7:30pm
Marines' Memorial Theatre, Second Floor
609 Sutter Street, San Francisco
Franchesca Ramsey didn't set out to be an activist. Or a comedian. Or a commentator on identity, race, and culture. But then her YouTube video What White Girls Say . . . to Black Girls went viral. Twelve million views viral. Faced with an avalanche of media requests, fan letters, and hate mail, she had two choices: Jump in and make her voice heard, or step back and let others frame the conversation.
Join MTV's Decoded star Francesca Ramsey for a conversation on her experiences as an accidental activist to explore the many ways we communicate with each other—from the highs of bridging gaps and making connections, to the many pitfalls that accompany talking about race, power, sexuality, and gender in an unpredictable public space—the internet.
CIIS Public Programs seeks to engage and inspire people who are curious about themselves and their world. We create innovative conversations, workshops, performances, certificate programs, and conferences. Our events further personal and social transformation by bringing together the diverse voices of visionaries, artists, changemakers, and scholars to share compelling experiences, offer new perspectives, and expand creative horizons. Public Programs enhances and reflects the university's academic mission.
